Tarsal Tunnel

Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is a condition that happens when a nerve in your ankle, called the posterior tibial nerve, is compressed or irritated. This nerve runs through a small space on the inside of your ankle known as the tarsal tunnel, which is like a narrow passageway surrounded by bones and ligaments. When this area becomes cramped or injured, the nerve can get “squeezed,” leading to pain, tingling, or numbness in your foot or toes.

Causes of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

There are numerous causes of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. These include:
  • Excessive high or low arch
  • Diabetes or thyroid disease
  • Injury to ankle
  • Tumor or cyst on inside of ankle
  • Poorly fitting shoes/ Lack of support

Dr. Kevin Powers explains the Tarsal Tunnel and how the posterior tibial nerve can be compressed causing pain and tingling in the foot.

Non-Surgical Treatments

There are several non-surgical treatments that could alleviate the discomfort caused by Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, including:

  • Orthotic arch supports
  • Rest
  • Ice for swelling
  • Anti inflammatory pills
  • Steroid injection
Surgical Treatments
The tissue surrounding the nerve and compressing the nerve is cut and released.

Once released, the nerve can heal itself. It could take several months for the pain or tingling to improve following surgery.
