Nerves of the Head and Neck

Key Nerves in the Head and Neck

Facial Nerve

The main function of the facial nerve is to control facial movements and expressions, but it also has sensory and secretory functions.

Inferior alveolar

A branch of the mandibular nerve (the third division of the trigeminal nerve, or cranial nerve V) that runs through the lower jaw and provides feeling to the lower teeth

Lingual Nerve

A branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V3). It provides sensation to the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, the floor of the mouth, and the inner surface of the gums near the lower teeth.

Recurrent Laryngeal

Nerves that supply motor control to most of the muscles of the larynx and sensation to the lower part of the larynx and vocal cords. These nerves are essential for speaking and breathing, and injury to them can cause voice changes or breathing difficulties.
